Cookie Policy

This page explains which cookies The Missing Level uses, what each one does, and how to change your mind later. It is short because the list is short.

What cookies are

Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. They let a site remember things between visits, such as a login, a language choice, or in our case, whether you agreed to analytics. They can also be used to track people across the web, which is exactly the kind of use this site avoids.

The short version

When you first arrive, this site sets no cookies at all. If analytics is enabled on the site, a banner asks for your choice, and only two things can happen after that. Decline, and the only cookie ever set is the one remembering that you declined. Accept, and Google Analytics is loaded and sets its own cookies so we can see which posts people read.

Strictly necessary

One cookie keeps the site working as expected, and it cannot be switched off because it stores the choice you make in the banner.

CookieDurationWhat it does
cc_cookie1 yearRemembers your cookie choices so the banner does not reappear on every visit.

The hosting provider (Cloudflare) may also set short-lived operational cookies of its own for security and traffic filtering. Those are controlled by Cloudflare rather than by this site, and they are not used to identify or profile you.

Analytics, only if you say yes

If you accept analytics, Google Analytics sets the following cookies. Until you accept, the Google Analytics code is not even loaded, so declining means these never exist in your browser.

CookieDurationWhat it does
_ga13 monthsDistinguishes one visitor from another so visits and sessions can be counted.
_ga_*13 monthsStores and counts page views for this site.

The reports we see are aggregated numbers, such as how many people read a post and which country they visited from. We never see names, emails, or anything that identifies you personally.

What about affiliate links?

Some posts may contain affiliate links. Clicking one takes you to the merchant's website, and any tracking cookie involved in crediting the referral is set there, on their domain and under their cookie policy. This site does not set any affiliate cookies itself, so there is no affiliate category in the consent banner.

The legal basis

For the necessary cookie the legal basis is legitimate interest, since the site cannot respect your choice without remembering it. For the analytics cookies the legal basis is your consent, which is asked for before anything is set and can be withdrawn at any time.

Changing your mind

You can change or withdraw your consent at any time through the "Cookie settings" link in the footer of every page, which reopens the same preferences panel the banner showed you. Withdrawing analytics consent removes the Google Analytics cookies. Your browser settings offer a blunter tool as well, since every browser lets you block or delete cookies for any site.

Changes

If the cookies this site uses ever change, this page will be updated first and the date at the top will reflect it. The banner will also ask for consent again if a new category of cookies is introduced.
